Nor All Thy Tears Journey to Big Sky An M/F/M Romantic Fiction Gerry Burnie 9781451581980 Books
I had previously enjoyed Gerry Burnie's historical drama "Two Irish Lads," which was about pioneers in 1800's Canada, so I was interested in trying his other novel "Nor All Thy Tears: Journey to Big Sky." This is not more of the same, however----the book is entirely different in tone and subject matter than the previous volume.I went into this story thinking it would be a detective/mystery tale; not surprising, given the blurb. But the reality turned out to be quite different. Once the initial mystery is set up in the opening pages, the following three-quarters of the novel tells the story of Sheldon's life, from childhood right up to the present, before finally getting back to the crime. So what we get is not really a mystery at all---the average reader will easily be able to piece together the identity of the victim, the murderer, and the motive for the crime before the book is half finished. This isn't really a problem however; as I said, this isn't a standard detective story and the saga of Sheldon's life is quite interesting. I liked hearing about how he rose from his very humble beginnings ---and about the various relationships he had along the way.
I thought this was a good read, though I do have a few reservations. The opening chapter is a bit heavy on political theatre. Oh, I know we have to understand the realities of Sheldon's life at that point in time, but anyone coming into the story cold might easily think this was going to be a political thriller, and it isn't that type of book at all. Plus---well, the mechanics of Canadian politics can be a bit dry to a reader not particularly invested in the system!
My real reservation about the book, however, has to do with the final eighth (or so) of the text; specifically, the way various characters reacted to the events that unfolded as the investigation reached its climax. Now, I know that human nature varies tremendously---if questioned, one hundred people may very well have one hundred completely different reactions to a tragic event. So, I can't say that the characters SHOULD have acted in a certain way. But---my own reactions to the events as they unfolded were so very, very different, so completely at odds, with how the characters behaved that I have to say the unfolding plot didn't seem true-to-life in the least. In fact, because of the way it was written I lost a great deal of my sympathy for the main characters, and I'm sure this wasn't the author's intention. I can't be more specific without giving away spoilers, but there were a number of very specific changes I wish were made to the text.
Plus, I have to add that I wasn't all too pleased at how a happy ending came at such a great cost to a couple of the supporting characters; it made me both sad and uncomfortable. But then, that's just me---I find the older I get the more I prefer very happy, upbeat fiction, so it's not exactly a surprise that a story with a murderer in it will have some content I don't care for!
Still.... despite my reservations there was a lot to like about the story, and I'll recommend it. Apparently the author is currently working on two historical adventures/romances, and I'll gladly check those out once they are published.
(Oh, I really do have to comment on the cover of this one. I don't know who came up with the concept, but it's SO misleading! What does this cover say to you? For me, it implies this will be a story of "city twink comes to the wide-open Canadian prairies and falls in love with an older rancher." And boy, absolutely nothing could be further from the story I just read. I'm afraid anyone buying this book based on the cover is going to be disappointed.)

Nor All Thy Tears Journey to Big Sky An M/F/M Romantic Fiction Gerry Burnie 9781451581980 Books Reviews
After having already read Mr. Burnie's "Two Irish Lads" and finding it an excellent read, I was hoping for at least its equal or better. I was not disappointed. Even better. This story was great.
Nor All Thy tears delivers!! A believeable story from the beginning, it's filled with drama, intrigue, and suspense, all the while delivering a glimpse into Canadian life and government.
This story moved at a good pace and each scene set way for the next. I was compelled to read without putting it down. And the story continued strong until the end. An excellent novel of love, passion and relationships in a dramatic setting. Two thumbs up!!
The intro sounded interesting and I like a good mystery, but 45 pages into this book and I realized that I felt absolutely nothing for Sheldon and doubted I ever would. The homophobic cop, Sokalowski, is painful to read and I had no interest in his character either except to hope that he disappeared quickly from the story. This story would benefit from the services of a good editor. I know it was written by a Canadian and I am well acquainted with the differences in spelling certain words, but there are grammatical errors and sometimes text which should have been pruned. You may find this interesting but I've decided to return it.
