This book had me up all night reading. In adrenaline-fueled horror. My chin may have been on the floor the entire time. I haven't seen such disregard for fairly decent character's lives since I first read Game of Thrones. I hate you for making me like people that aren't going to live but love you for having the guts to actually kill them off. Kept me in the book til it was over. And I loved the ending. Well deserved. I give you all of the stars, more if I could. Thank you for entertaining me with this bloodbath. *heart eyes*Tags : Afraid [Jack Kilborn] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <B >ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK? Afraid Jack Kilborn 9780446535939 Books Reviews
I really couldn't put this book down at first, I really loved it. The pacing was awesome, there wasn't a lot of unnecessary character build up - it just went straight into the action and story and gore which I appreciate in this kind of story. Quite a few likeable characters, even if they only lived for a little while. But then in about the last thirty or forty pages, the book completely falls flat. I found myself skimming over the ending, which I never do. Not sure what happened there. One of these characters was put through so much physical torture in particular it was just unrealistic though - from beginning to end I was just praying for this guy's misery to end!
I was also a bit disappointed that the events in this book weren't supernatural, but the description was vague, so it was a toss up anyway. This was my first book by this author and I will buy again.
First all reviewers who say this had no story and it's pure shock are clueless. It all begins on a typically peaceful night in Safe Haven Wisconsin. Sal Morton is an old man out fishing on the lake behind his and his wife Maggie's house. When out of nowhere a helicopter crashes and brings with it pure terror and evil that will change or end everyone's life forever. The inhabitants of the chopper are men that the government has conducted experiments on to create the perfect super soldier and these men were not from a desirable place to begin with. They're after someone and something in Safe Haven and will stop at nothing to get what they are looking for.
This is a wonderfully intense, tight, and vividly painted tale of suspense and horror with our protagonists seemingly at odds they cannot overcome or even possibly begin to understand. Great read and one you cannot put down once you start. Konrath/Kilborn is a superb writer and puts you amidst the action and terror of the story. Solid and pure five stars. Highly recommend. You can't go wrong by reading this book if you love true hardcore to the bone horror.
This story had many characters. Too many in the beginning. And too many different story lines. There was much confusion for a good part of the book as it jumped from story line to story line. I almost gave up on it since I could not tell what was going on for about 1/3 of the book. It was just brutal senseless violence during thAt part of the story. It was over halfway before what was going on became clear. I would not recommend this to my friends.
If you’re looking for something to make you squirm this is your book. I’ll admit that it doesn’t have much of a plot but if you’re looking for blood, guts and gratuitous violence then this is the book for you. A bunch of crazed killers are let loose in a remote Wisconsin town and the story jumps around from location to location as people are slaughtered and tortured as they look for the person they’re searching for. To give you a sense of how gruesome this book is, I was listening to part of it while eating my lunch and shortly after I started eating I wished I wasn’t. This book is perfect for Halloween time if you’re not prone to nightmares!
I’m sure you’ve read the synopsis so I won’t bore you with much about that. The setting is a peaceful little town in the wilderness. One way in, one way out. Who will survive the night?
When a helicopter crashes, horror of such magnitude is unleashed on the denizens. How can they survive what’s come calling? How do they fight back? That’s where it gets crazy.
One thing I’ve learned from reading this author, you get a diverse mix of characters. I suspect some are easy surplus to spot. But don’t thing those characters you become attached to will make it through the night. Jack isn’t above killing them off and does so frequently in his books.
And I feel I need to warn you, this is gory to the nth level. I actually cringed at a lot of the violence, but, having read the author before, I’ve come to expect it.
This isn’t for the feint of heart, but it’s good fodder for fans of violence, gore, and psychological mayhem.
In my younger days, I used to love horror stories,' the more bodies, blood, guts and gore, the better. Now days, I find myself covering my eyes or turning my head away. It bothers me now, when back then, I would laugh at the absurdity of it all. Horror films were my comedies, because they were too ridiculous to be taken seriously. And I had never read a book that came close ........................... until now.
The story was fascinating, but the horror was over the top. I found it so intense and bloody and horrible, that I couldn't read certain passages, and had to pass over them, because the images they brought to my mind were just too horrible to read about.
Fast paced, intense, most definitely a page-turner. This is one book that lives up to it's title in every way. "Afraid"..........a novel of TERROR! And that is no understatement!!!
